ELIZA, 1966: The First Documented Case of a Machine Convincing People It Understood Them
In January 1966 MIT's Joseph Weizenbaum published ELIZA, whose DOCTOR script imitated a psychotherapist purely by keyword pattern-matching, and reported that users attributed understanding and empathy to it and were very hard to convince it was not human.
